Employment law, UK

Employment law, answered clearly

Ask the question you actually have. Tom answers in plain language, tells you when something is serious, and says when it is not sure.

Notice periods, contracts, pay and holiday, sick leave, pensions, discrimination, disciplinary process and redundancies.

Example

I gave a employee 2 weeks’ notice but they want a month. Can I insist?
Not quite. A week’s notice is the statutory minimum for anyone employed a month or more, so you can pay it — but you cannot insist on it. An employee with two years’ service can claim unfair dismissal and the tribunal would usually side with them.

Not legal advice. Serious situations need a solicitor.
